List Poem – Addition

Originally written for my Creative Writing Class back in November of 2010.

 

Addition

The seconds add up to minutes
The minutes add up to hours
The hours add up to days
The days add up to years.

The words add up to jibes
The jibes add up to fights
The fights add up to hurts
The hurts add up to tears

The sorrys add up to forgiveness
The forgiveness adds up to friends
The friends add up to a shield
The shield against the fears

As the seconds add up to minutes
to hours to days to years
Though the inches add up to feet to miles
I know you’re always near

Both as easy
to do
when you have
just one thing.
The
secret.
The
answer
to the
question
asked
by all.
An object.
A common
expression.
Ah, Eureka.
I have it. I know what
must                       be and
what                         I must
Do.                           I know
it all                          now.
I have       the answer.
I have it, the key
