Rhetorical Question Poem – What a Book Thinks

This poem was written for a Creative Writing class in December 2010.

What a Book Thinks

I wonder what a book thinks?
I suppose it feels important
Containing knowledge, never forgetting.
Are there any books that wish they were printed differently?
A biography longing to be a fantasy novel?
Or maybe they’re just happy to have their own story
Maybe they listen to each other
Share their own stories
And stand together, packed on a shelf.

Writing About Others Poem

This poem was written for a Creative Writing class in December of 2010.

(This assignment was to write about someone else.)

It’s a(n almost) thankless job

Today my mother will get up
eat breakfast
go to work
write a manual
deal with programmers
eat lunch
answer questions
drive back home
write for class
drive back out
pick up kids
come back home
make dinner
write some more
and go to sleep.
And tomorrow she will get up and do it all again.
She asks for no more, gives no less
and will do it all again and again
because before she went to bed
her daughter hugged her
and said, “I love you mom”

Someday Poem

This poem was originally written for a Creative Writing class in December 2010.

Someday…
Someday I will paint a picture
so beautiful it will make you cry.
Someday I will sing a song
that makes you feel like you can fly.
Someday I will will design
something everyone can use.
Someday I will win the game
or be good sport when I lose.
Somday I will comfort someone
hold them close as they weep.
Someday I will change the world
and then I will lay down to sleep.

Bull Durham Credo Form Poems

These poems were originally written for a Creative Writing class in December of 2010.

And before you ask, no I don’t know who/what Bull Durham is. Google it.

Credo 1

I believe in ability to choose
the desire to lose
the thought and the mind
and in the heart most kind.

But our fate isn’t decided
And no story is one-sided

I believe we make our fate
I believe we can love and hate
I believe its our decision
To meet hate not with derision
But with a calm and lasting peace

And I believe one day hate will cease.

Credo 2

I believe in the ability to choose,
the power of the mind,
the strength of love,
the need for peace.

But we need not put each other down.

I believe in the creativity that will keep us alive
I believe in the consequences of the choices we make
I believe in the strength we can lend each other.

And I believe that no matter how independent we may seem, we still need the presence of another human being.

First Line/Last Line Poem – Know This, Friend

This poem was originally written for a Creative Writing class in December 2010.

This one I think was written for my friend who was leaving for Korea for six months.

Know This, Friend

Before you go
Know that I’ll miss you
Know that I love you, my friend
Know that I’ll always be there

Before you go
Know that I’ll be here
Know that I’ll listen
Know that no matter what, I care

Before you go
Know that I’ll go too
Know that I’ll leave someday
Know that I’ll be out there somewhere

And after you go
Know that you can come back
For a day, an hour, or just words on the phone
Know that your friend is always there.
